ABOUT SONNY'S

Floyd "Sonny" Tillman and his wife, Lucille, founded Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q in Gainesville, Florida. The year was 1968.

Their goal was to create a casual restaurant that offered the very best authentic southern Bar-B-Q including slow-smoked Bar-B-Q Ribs, Sliced Bar-B-Q Pork and Beef, and Bar-B-Q Chicken. You could tell it was real Bar-B-Q by the pinkish ring around the meat and the smokey flavor that only comes from a real hardwood smoker, and the authentic Bar-B-Q Sauces served tableside. Great Bar-B-Q wasn't the only reason folks stopped by. They could always count on fast, friendly service every time they visited.

It was this commitment to authenticity and friendly service that set the stage for things to come. Soon, Gainesville's best kept secret wasn't a secret anymore and Sonny and Lucille's restaurant succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

In 1977, the Tillmans began franchising. Sonny retired in 1991 and Bob and Jeff Yarmuth purchased the company. The Yarmuths had already been successful Sonny's franchisees in the Orlando area since 1980.

Over the years, Sonny's has added new specialties, such as Sweet and Smokey St. Louis Bar-B-Q Ribs, Hand Pulled Pork, and tender, fall-off-the-bone Baby Back Ribs. But some things haven't changed. Sonny's Bar-B-Q is still prepared the old-fashioned way in a real hardwood smoker. And it's served fast and friendly just like the old days.

Today, Sonny's is the largest Bar-B-Q chain in America with more than 150 restaurants operating in nine Southeastern states: Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

And Sonny's is still growing. Thanks to the vision of Sonny and Lucille Tillman, Sonny's is well on its way to becoming one of the premier restaurants, of any type, in the country. Their dreams continue today. After almost 40 years, it's still about "Feel Good Bar-B-Q".
